Terms of use

By using Recess you're agreeing to these terms. You need to be at least 13. If you're using it on behalf of an organisation — a venue, say — you're confirming you're allowed to agree on its behalf.

We can change these terms as the app grows. If a change is significant we'll tell you in the app rather than relying on you re-reading this page.

Recess is about meeting people in the real world, which raises the stakes on behaviour. The community guidelines you accept when you join are part of these terms. In short:

• Show up when you've said you will, or cancel early enough for someone else to take the spot.
• No harassment, hate, threats, or sexual content involving minors — ever, and we report the last one.
• Don't use Recess to sell things, recruit, or run a business that isn't a hosted session or a listed venue.
• Don't misrepresent who you are, and don't post someone else's photo or personal details without their say-so.
• Respect the space you're in and the people who run it.

Blocking and reporting are built into every surface. We can remove content, suspend, or permanently remove an account that breaks these rules — and we'd rather do that than keep someone unsafe.

What you make is yours. You keep ownership of everything you post. You give Recess the permission it needs to actually run the product — to store your content, show it to the people you chose to show it to, and display it in the app.

That permission is limited to operating Recess. We don't use your entries in advertising, and we don't hand them to anyone outside the visibility you set.

Some sessions are free, some carry a small refundable buy-in, and some have a seat fee set by a host or venue. All of it is shown before you commit.

• Refundable buy-ins are held, not charged, and released when you check in. They exist to make plans real, not to make money.
• Seat fees are collected at booking. Where a session has a deposit, the balance is charged shortly before it runs.
• If a host cancels, everyone is refunded in full.
• If you cancel late or don't turn up, the buy-in may be kept — that's the point of it, and it's disclosed when you join.

Payments are processed by Stripe under their terms. Card details never touch Recess.

Hosts and venues are independent — Recess isn't your employer, and we don't run your session or your space. You're responsible for running it safely and lawfully, including any licences, insurance and permissions your local rules require.

You set your prices. Recess takes a disclosed platform fee and pays out the rest through Stripe. You're responsible for your own taxes.

Claiming a venue means telling us you're authorised to represent it. Claiming somewhere you don't run is grounds for removal.

This is the part we most want you to actually read. Recess helps you find people and places, but we don't vet attendees, hosts or venues, and we're not present at anything that happens.

Use ordinary judgement: meet somewhere public the first time, tell someone where you're going, and leave if it feels off. Activities carry their own risks — a kiln is hot, a climbing wall is high — and you take those on yourself.

To the fullest extent the law allows, Recess isn't liable for what happens between people who met through it, or for injury, loss or damage at a session or venue.

Recess is provided as it is. We'll try to keep it running and accurate, but we can't promise it will always be available, bug-free, or that every venue detail is current — some of that information comes from third-party map providers and changes without telling us.

We may change, pause or discontinue features. If we ever shut something down that holds your content, we'll give you a way to get it out first.

You can delete your account in the app at any time, under Settings — no email required. We can suspend or end an account that breaks these terms or puts other people at risk.
