Privacy

Your account. A phone number or Apple ID to sign you in, plus the display name, handle, city and photo you choose. You can browse a lot of Recess without ever filling in a bio.

What you put in. Entries you log, photos you attach, plans you create or join, projects, crews, reactions and messages. This is the app; there's no way to have Recess without it.

Where things happened. If you attach a place to an entry or a plan, we store that place. If you tap “use my location”, we use your device's position to sort nearby results — we don't track you in the background, and we don't keep a history of where you've been.

Basic technical data. Device and app version, crash/error reports, and a push token if you turn notifications on.

Some things in Recess aren't private because we promise to be careful. They're private because of how the software is built, which is a stronger guarantee.

Your mood check-ins. If you record how you felt before and after making something, that lives in its own table that only you can read. It is never included in a feed, a card, another person's profile, or anything we'd show anyone else — not a friend, not a host, not a venue.

Solo entries. An entry marked solo is visible to you and nobody else. That's enforced by the database, not by a filter in the app.

Who can see the rest. Every entry and plan carries a visibility — friends, friends-of-friends, or your city — and the database enforces it on every read. Blocking someone cuts visibility in both directions.

We don't sell your data, and we don't run ads. There's no advertising business here to feed.

We use a small number of services to make the app work at all:

• Supabase — hosts the database, accounts and photo storage.
• Stripe — processes payments. Card details go straight to Stripe and never touch Recess's servers or the app.
• Google Maps Platform — powers real-world place search, so you can attach any café, park or studio to what you make. When you search for a place, your query and an approximate location hint are sent to Google. Their use of that data is governed by the Google Privacy Policy.
• Apple and Expo — deliver push notifications and app updates.
• Resend — sends the waitlist and contact emails from this website.

We may also share information if the law requires it, or where we genuinely believe it's needed to stop someone being hurt.

Delete everything. Account deletion is in the app, under Settings. It removes your profile, entries, photos and memberships. We don't make you email us to leave.

Change your mind about visibility. Entries and plans can be edited or deleted at any time, including making something solo after the fact.

Turn things off. Notifications, location and comfort filters are all under your control in Settings.

If you're in a place with a legal right to access, correct, port or erase your data — the UK/EU, California and others — those rights apply to you, and asking us is enough to exercise them.

Your content stays until you delete it or delete your account. Cached details about real-world places — the name and address a maps provider gave us — expire on a rolling basis and are refreshed or removed, because that data is licensed to us rather than owned by us.

Some records survive deletion where we're required to keep them: payment records, for instance, have tax and anti-fraud retention periods set by law rather than by us.

Recess is for people 13 and over. If you believe a child under 13 has an account, tell us and we'll remove it.
